Under direct current, copper ions in the plating bath migrate to the workpiece acting as the cathode. After gaining electrons, the ions reduce to metallic copper and gradually form a dense, even coating. Meanwhile, the copper anode dissolves to replenish copper ions in the solution.

 

A typical system consists of four main elements: the plating bath (containing copper ions, complexing agents, and additives), the cathode (the part to be plated), the anode (pure copper or soluble anode), and a direct current power supply. Although the process appears simple, precise control of current density, bath composition, temperature, and pH is crucial to avoid defects such as pinholes, peeling, or uneven thickness.
